Sarah applied in March for a New Zealand Chef placement. HTE Internships will be placing Sarah into Queenstown, New Zealand. We asked Sarah some questions about why she applied and what she is most looking forward to in NZ. You can check out what she said below.

.

.

Why did you decide to apply for a placement abroad?

I recently travelled to Israel for the first time for 10 days on a Birthright trip without knowing anyone. By the end of the trip I had 40 new friends from around the world and was itching to go elsewhere in the world. I’ve been born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. While I absolutely love where I’ve grown up, I feel like I need to see more of the world before I settle.

.

How do you think this will help you in the future?

I truly feel that traveling/living abroad will help with a number of things in the future. First, I am a certified pastry chef and though the US has amazing opportunities that I will hopefully take advantage of at some point in my life, right now is the best time for me to experience life and kitchens in a different country. Also, I have never lived on my own before besides a college dorm room with a roommate and going across the world not knowing anyone and having to fend for myself (in such a beautiful country) will be the best way to do that. Plus, I hope in moving to New Zealand for a period of time will jump start my plan to tour the world.

.

What are you most looking forward to in New Zealand?

The gorgeous landscapes and different wildlife. Also, I am looking forward to working in a kitchen in a different country than I’m used to.

.

What do you hope to achieve/ learn on your placement abroad?

I hope to learn what it means to live on my own. I also hope to gain friendships and network with colleagues.

.

How do you think future employers will view your time abroad?

I hope that future employees see my time spent abroad as an additional learning experience. They will see that I’m not afraid to get out there and do something different that what I am/have been used to.

.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are you?

Probably close to a 15.
