We asked Leah some questions about why she applied and what she is most looking forward to in NZ. You can check out what she said below.

.

Why did you decide to apply for a hospitality placement abroad?

I love to travel and what better way to do it then to gain career enhancing experience at the same time! I love to meet new people from different parts of the world and learn about their cultures and their approaches to service.

.

How do you think this will help you in the future?

I strongly believe that traveling, meeting new people from different backgrounds, and exposing yourself to new experiences is beneficial not only for expanding career-related knowledge but also for one’s personal growth. I think if everyone spent some time living in new places, outside the comfort zone of their own culture and familiar way of life, that the world would be a more tolerant, thoughtful, and understanding place.

.

What are you most looking forward to in Australia?

I am especially excited to learn about Australia’s unique cuisine and wine offerings. A foodie at heart, I can’t wait to try seafood, meat and vegetables native to the region that are not prevalent or even available in North America. I look forward to enjoying the stunning ocean views and sipping a chilled glass of Clare Valley Riesling! I am also enchanted by Australia’s vastly diverse wildlife. I cant wait to do a bit of hiking, water-sports, and biking. I also secretly harbor a childlike desire to cradle a koala.

.

What do you hope to achieve/ learn during your time abroad?

I hope to learn more about the differing styles of service and approaches to hospitality on an international level. I hope to broaden my knowledge of regional foods and wine varieties and gain a sense of the Australian approach to food preparation and menu design. I want to expand my service potential by polishing my knowledge with further luxury training and by learning from international co-workers and their prior experiences. I want to achieve a more complex understanding of luxury service on an international stage so that I will feel more confident providing exceptional service to diverse international guests and more comfortable working with new and unique team members in the future.

.

How do you think future employers will view your time abroad?

The Whitsundays are widely known as exciting and luxurious tourist destinations. I believe that future employers would take into consideration the quality of service demanded by those luxury resorts as well as the dedication and commitment to the trade demonstrated by traveling across the world to advance my training and experience.

.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are you?

Well … 10 of course! I can’t hardly wait!
