HTE Internships placed Mark into a Hotel Internship in Wellington, New Zealand. Mark started in June, with plenty of time to be ready for the Rugby World Cup this year. We asked Mark some questions about how he is enjoying NZ, how his money is going and what it is like living and working in abroad.  You can check out what Mark said below.

.

How was your first week of work, did you have induction?

My first week of work was pretty good, everybody was friendly and previous interns helped me to settle in well. They also organised a social with a day full of board games, food, drinks and a few games of bowling in town.

.

How are the people at your work, are they friendly, easy to ask questions?

Everybody at work was friendly and all interested in getting to know me. They were all helpful with getting to know stuff in and around wellington.

.

Are there any interns in your hotel or city that you have caught up with?

There are currently 3 interns at my 4 star hotel including myself. There was also another intern there during my first month in NZ who helped me settle in. I haven’t seen any other interns else where in Wellington but i did meet a few gap year students when I was at Base.

.

How easy was it to find accommodation and how much are you paying?

It didn’t take me very long to find accommodation. As soon as I walked into the hostel the girl behind the desk told me she was moving house so I snapped up her room straight away, it is only $130 a week, plus which ever bills on top. The flat is fully furnished so I didn’t have to buy anything.

.

How are you liking living abroad?

Living abroad is really good, and has given me a great opportunity to see the other side of the world. The way they live is quite different as they are all very relaxed.

.

What has been the highlight of your trip so far?

The highlight of my trip so far was just a few days ago where I did a bit of travelling. I got out of wellington for the first time, went quad biking, kayaking and rock climbing. I got the see some amazing views from the interisland ferry (wellington – picton), the coach ride between and got to see seals while kayaking.

.

What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Hardest part is getting sorted to be able to come out here, from then on its all plain sailing. Its easy to find a somewhere to live and everybody is helpful. Also….to book 2 one way flights if you are to go for 12 months+ as no airline will allow you to return after 12 months, then just change your return at some point.

.

What’s your best tip for next years students wanting to head to NZ?

I had to wait about 2/3 weeks for my first pay slip as I did not have my tax number. So I’d say to head up to the nearest IRD so you don’t have to wait so long.

Food prices etc are also more expensive than in the UK but you can get by and still save a good amount for travelling.

My best tip overall though would to be to get here and do it as, as I am defiantly glad I am doing my placement over the other side of the world rather than in the UK.

.

What’s your favourite “Kiwi food” you have tried?

I do like the Devil sausages which they have hear, there a better version of sausage n mash. But i haven’t exactly tried any kiwi foods, its all your typical western foods. Places like Burger Fuel and Hells pizza are really good though, and Pizza hut, Mcdonalds, Dominos are all cheaper than in England….Which Could be bad for those though go all the time haha.

.

Anything else you can think of…anything?

NZ winter is great! We had 2 weeks worth of snow or rain….the rest of it was sun shine! So if your sick of English winter then this is the place to be.
