We placed Gareth into one of New Zealand’s top tourist attractions in a food and beverage role. The restaurant is situated at the top of the attraction. We asked Gareth some questions about how he is enjoying NZ, how his money is going and what it is like living and working in abroad. You can check out what Gareth said below.

.

.

How was your first week of work?

First week at work was very interesting, having only been part of a small catering team, looking at how the restaurant there was extremely interesting for me! Everyone was very helpful and seeing as quite a few interns go there, knew what it was like to start a new job in a different country was!

.

Run me through a typical work day?

On a typical day, I would start at 8-10 in the morning! But having to catch the bus and gondala up to the restaurant means i would have to leave the house an hour before work! On a arrival I would either wait upon breakfast guests ( if there are breakfast guests ) or I would set up the buffet or tables for lunch. Then wait upon the lunch guests! After Lunch service finishes 2.30 i would clean down the buffet for the lunch waiters to set up for lunch! And then finish off the day at 4.30-5 after polishing cutlery.

.

Are there any interns in your work or city that you have caught up with?

I’m very pleased at the way other people are at work, nearly everyone is friendly and are willing to chat and help me if i need it! If i have a problem with anything the bosses and supervisors are again, very friendly and willing to help!

.

I regularly see Ryan, as he works in the restaurant with me! And will chat with Kerry and Karl if they are in the staff room, who are also on the HTE Internships programme.

.

How easy was it to find accommodation and how much are you paying?

I arrived on a Tuesday, by Saturday I had been to a house for a look, and moved in on the Sunday. I pay $110 a week, the house is fully furnished and the other people who live here are very friendly and they’ve taken me mountain biking climbing, running in a forest! (Missed out on water skiing because i was working 🙁 )

.

How are you liking living abroad?

Does not feel as though I am living abroad seeing as Wales is so similar to N.Z, but missing friends and family and my dog! But otherwise I’m enjoying it!

.

What has been the highlight of your trip so far?

So far, the highlight of my trip has been wandering in the forests that are around Rotorua, and visiting Hamilton to watch Wales thrash Fiji!

.

What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

I haven’t really had a big problem so far, possibly missing my flight to Rotorua from Auckland due to a delay in Brisbane. But was placed in a nice hotel and got a flight in the morning, so can’t complain.

.

What’s your best tip for next years students heading to NZ?

The best tip i could give is just to talk to the locals, they know better than any book or whats you can find on the internet! So just not to be afraid to ask!

.

What’s your favourite “Kiwi food” you have tried?

I went to Mitai Maori night one night with my cousin, and we ate a hangi, and the chicken in the hangi was gorgeous.

.

Anything else you can think of?

Can’t wait to buy a bike over here, will be much better than walking and catching the bus! + there’s so many mountain biking trails here.
