We asked James some questions about why he applied and what he is most looking forward to in NZ. You can check out what he said below.

.

Why did you decide to apply for an internship abroad?

One of the main reasons I chose an internship abroad was because I have always wanted to travel to other parts of the world and experience their culture and the different customs. So to me this is an amazing opportunity for me to live and work in one of the top tourist destinations in the world and get a taste of the culture and way of life for myself, as well as meet new people and make new friends.

.

How do you think this will help you in the future?

I feel that going abroad will be an incredible experience and be very beneficial for me as millions of people travel to New Zealand every year, so what better place to come and work and gain experience and develop my skills than New Zealand. Working abroad will allow me to not only improve the skills I have but help me to learn new ones as well as experience different walks of life. All of this I will take with me and it will undoubtedly be extremely useful in helping me to progress in my future career.

.

What are you most looking forward to in New Zealand?

What I am most interested in about New Zealand is the diverse and beautiful landscapes and the host of different experiences on offer there. For instance one of the activities I would really like to do would be to go whale and dolphin spotting in Kaikoura. I would also take a trip to Wellington to the Weta Cave to see some of Peter Jacksons work and the different Lord of the Rings related models and special effects studios, as well as this I would love to take a look around Nelson to see some of the beautiful locations where the Lord of the Rings films were made. I am a huge fan of the trilogy. The Rugby in New Zealand is also another attraction that I would be keen to experience and maybe visit Eden Park and experience the atmosphere for myself.

.

What do you hope to achieve/ learn on your internship abroad?

I hope to achieve a number of different things if I get the chance to go to New Zealand. I would like to work in the different departments within wherever I am placed in the Hospitality sector so that I can gain a much better understanding and learn a wider range of skills. This will of great benefit to me as hotels in New Zealand are quite different to what we have here in Belfast and tend to be of a better quality and I feel that gaining experience in these establishments would be a huge benefit to my future career.

.

How do you think future employers will view your time abroad?

I think that future employers would see my experience abroad as a great advantage as I will have acquired an in-depth knowledge and experienced first-hand other cultures that many studying my degree won’t have. This would give me an edge and really help me in my career, as New Zealand is one of the most popular destinations in the world and known for its top quality hospitality, gaining experience here would be extremely beneficial as this will greatly improve my skills and help me to stand out from others working in the Industry.

.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are you?

I am extremely excited about going on placement in New Zealand and meeting new people and making friends, it would the an unforgettable journey and the experience of a lifetime.
