Am I guaranteed a placement if I apply and pay my deposit today?

We cannot guarantee we will find you a placement in New Zealand as it is down to the hotels to pick you. If for some reason we could not find you a placement we would refund your deposit in full, so there is no risk of you losing your deposit if HTE Internships did not find you a placement.

We do reduce the risk of this happening in a few ways:

1. We ask for your CV and cover letter before you apply to make sure you are eligible

2. Before we accept your application we send your CV and cover letter to our New Zealand team to make sure they think you are “placeable”

.

Will I be paid on my internship?

You certainly will! All positions at HTE Internships in New Zealand are paid. Your employer will set your hourly wage, however your starting wage will usually be between NZ$12 and NZ$16 per hour. All employers we work with will give you a minimum of 30 hours per week, on average across your placement. In the busy times you will work more and possibly some over time and in the quiet times you will drop down to less hours.

Your wage will be enough to cover your living costs in New Zealand. Most people have a little left over, but this is hard to say as everyone spends money differently!

.

How much will I be paid?

Your employer will set your wage but for New Zealand this will be between NZD13 and NZD16 per hour.

.

When do I get paid, weekly or monthly?

In New Zealand you will either get paid weekly or fortnightly (ever 2 weeks), in rare cases you will be paid monthly, we will let you know this when we send you your offer of employment.

You will not be paid for the first 3-4 weeks you work in New Zealand until you receive your tax number. Once you have this you will receive all the pay from your first month, so a big pay check. But you will need to budget enough money to get through the first 3-4 weeks with no pay.

.

Will my weekly wage be enough to cover my living costs?

Yes, your wage will cover your living costs, the feedback from our students is that most have money left over to save, but this does depend on how you spend money. If you eat out every night then you will not save much money!

.

How many hours will I work?

You will be working 30-40 hours per week on average over your placement. As everyone knows the hospitality industry is up and down so some weeks in the busy periods you could be working 60 hours per week, in other times you could work 20 hours per week. So on average over your internship you will be working between 30 and 40 hours per week.

.

What kind of training will I receive?

All new employees will receive an induction. This varies between hotels and could be anywhere from one week up to 8 weeks long depending on the hotel and your position.

.

Will I be travelling to New Zealand by myself?

Maybe… We try to put as many students in touch with other, who are heading down to New Zealand at the same time. Each year we place 40-50 students and graduates to start between June and September. For those that want to be put in touch with other people to organise their travel, we will be doing this. Outside of June – September we also have a lot of students and graduates starting so we will do the same.

.

What visa will I be on and should I apply for this now?

No need to worry about visas yet, HTE Internships will help you with your visa application. Your visa is applied for once we have your offer from a New Zealand employer. We check that you are eligible for a work visa when we check over your CV and cover letter before you apply. If you are unsure about the correct visa for you, let us know and we can talk you through this.

.

If I apply with a friend or group of friends, can we all work together?

We often have friends or a group of friends apply together. We will try and place you all into the same city. You might not be working at the same hotel, but you will be in the same city, so you can all live together.

.

Do we need to find our own accommodation?

As part of the New Zealand programme, we will provide you with accommodation when you first arrive. We will book you into accommodation for 1 or 2 weeks and we will pay the first two nights of this as part of the programme. After the first two nights we have paid for you can decide to stay and pay the cost which will be NZ$30-40 per night or move into your own accommodation.

From there you can find your own accommodation in the city you are working in. Although this can seem quite daunting, it is in fact very easy. Most of our students and graduates find this in the first or second week after arriving. We will provide you with some resources for finding this, but many people find this through their work or other students when they get there.

For accommodation in New Zealand most of our students/ graduates pay between NZ$100 and NZ$180 on average to rent a room within a house (flat share). This can vary between cities.

.

Can I apply for a management trainee internship?

We don’t place into management trainee or management internship as a starting position in New Zealand. Employers like to hire you into a starting position in one of their departments and evaluate you to see what skills and competencies you have. Most importantly, they want to see what your attitude is like. From there they could move you into a management trainee or supervisory position, BUT this is not guaranteed.

.

Will I need to interview for my internship position?

Most hotels require you to do a phone interview before accepting you for a position. New Zealand is a very relaxed country in general, so this is not a high pressured thing to do. HTE Internships will help you to put yourself across in the best way with some tips and a little training as part of the programme if you want it.

.

My passport needs renewing, can I still apply?

Yes, as long as you hold a passport from a country that is eligible for a work visa we can accept your application without your passport copy and you can get this to us later.

.

Will I be able to move departments during my internship?

We do have many students/ graduates progress into different departments and some into higher positions in the same team. This however is not guaranteed and any movement would be down to your hard work, attitude and an opening in that team/ position. One thing that restricts students moving into front office team is that they don’t have a full drivers license, so you would need this if you wanted to move into front office.
